Once Hull won the ball, they caused a foul by Gray on the right flank. George Hahnemann swung over the free kick and left Smith unattended to head hard into the top corner.
This was not a coincidence of the fighters in the tournament. Keep exciting Benitez’s team. Asmir Begovic’s first job was to get the ball out of the net but then he was called up to work on his first appearance since September.
Tom Ives was the source of Everton’s troubles, heading from a similar area to Smith’s goal and forcing Begovic to turn the bar. The Bosnian goalkeeper also saved from Eves in his near position as
“You’re going to be fired in the morning,” Hull fans, who soon joined the Everton fans, chanted, to their displeasure at the Spaniard.
Benitez showed no emotion when his team drew, and it was only because of Gray. He expertly trapped a hanging ball in a dangerous situation before heading towards goal. After exchanging passes with Anthony Gordon, he scored under Nathan Baxter, his third goal in five matches.
With Everton enjoying their best spell in the first half, Gordon hit the post by himself as he danced through Hull’s defense, while also saving Baxter with a long-range shot from Gray.
Hull’s goalkeeper, on loan from Chelsea, had a save for Everton and well saved from Michael Keane, who blasted off from the center of defense to get a pass from Gongjoi Kenny and doubled his goal towards the bottom corner.
But he could do nothing to stop Everton from taking the lead after the half-hour mark, with Gomez’s header hitting a Kenny cross. After their disastrous start, Benitez is now mobile, telling his players where he wants them as they defend their lead.
Vitaly Mikolenko was making his Everton debut and it was a baptism of fire for the Ukrainian full-back as he saw all sides of his new team. They looked dangerous going forward and fragile at the other end, which required their £17m full-back to shove him off the streak.
Gordon could have added to the score when he was served up, but Baxter blocked his corner on goal and saved. What would worry Benitez is how in control his team looked, only to be hooked by Hull.
McCann can be credited with his role in the goal as all three of his substitutes were combined to equalize. First Tom Huddleston wins the ball in midfield, then Georges Moncure leads his team towards the penalty kick. His hairstyle called for Longman to curl his end in the top corner of the edge of the box.
In another attack, Ken Lewis Potter hit the post after cutting it in, with Hull feeling upset.
While the crowd was well below capacity, there was a cup tie atmosphere that saw things thrown onto the touchline in the second half causing a brief pause.
As the penalties approached, Townsend needed a moment of magic. The substitute picked up the ball 30 yards from the goal before stepping out to maneuver around his old Tottenham teammate Huddleston. His shot landed in the top corner.
He still needed a superb save from Begovic to deny Ives from close range and prevent penalties.
