Novak Djokovic has had plenty of victories on court, but he is now facing a great battle on court, as he fights to stay in Melbourne to compete in the Australian Open.
His unvaccinated Serbian visa was canceled upon arrival in Australia last week and he has spent the last four nights in Melbourne’s notorious immigration detention centre.
Lawyers for the 34-year-old will tell the court that he should be allowed to remain in Australia because a new infection with the Covid virus has left him exempt from the requirements to enter the vaccine.
Government lawyers dismissed that argument, saying Djokovic failed to meet medical standards because his illness was not “severe,” according to a report released late on Sunday.
They will seek to dismiss his appeal at costs, paving the way for his deportation as soon as Monday evening.
The online federal court hearing is scheduled to begin at 10:00 am (2300 GMT Sunday).
