Davenpolis suffered a second earthquake in less than 48 hours

The Seismology Center of the University of São Paulo (USP) confirmed this Thursday (1/13) a new earthquake in Devenpolis, in the Midwest of Minas Gerais. This is the second in less than 48 hours.

The first was at 8:13 pm on Tuesday (1/11). Initially, it was recorded by USP screen size 2.9. In the sequence it was corrected to 3.

Today was recorded at 15:32 with a strength of 2.9.

The epicenter will be Devenpolis Industrial Center, in the Ikara neighborhood, as on Tuesday (1/11). However, since the nearest station is 100 km away, in Bom Susiso, there is an uncertainty of 5-10 km.

“It must be a few kilometers deep, and it cannot be accurately determined,” says the USP report published on Tuesday (1/11).

In the latest report, the USP also stated that the 2.9 is small, even in Brazilian terms. These shivers are more common in Minas Gerais.

Small earthquakes can occur anywhere in Brazil, and are caused by movement in faults or geological fractures in the Earth’s crust. The ~3 magnitude corresponds to a movement of a few millimeters in a fracture of ~300 m in length and may be a few km deep. The report stated that the movement of these fractures is due to the geological pressures to which the earth’s crust is exposed.

Reports

Divinpolis City Hall contacted the USP today after the first reports from residents. Instructions for anyone who felt the earthquake to register through the link moho.iag.usp.br/eq/dyfi in the “Sentiu Ai” area and report what happened.

“The Divinopolitan narrative can help scientists discover possible causes for the tremors that have been felt in the city in recent days,” said Devenpolis City Council.

The last earthquake recorded by the Seismology Center was in the Midwest city of Minas on July 11, 1990, with a magnitude of 2.8, with no damage reported. “Amounts less than 4 rarely cause any harm and are nothing to worry about,” the USP said in a note.
