Manchester City target Julian Alvarez earlier discussed the pleasure he had playing with Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi at the international level.

The River Plate striker has his eye on winning a place in Argentina’s squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and hopes a move to Man City will boost his chances of doing so.

The 21-year-old has become the latest offensive threat to be featured on the Blues’ radar as City bid for the best South American footballer.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News, he is said to have a £16.75m release clause in his contract with current club, River Plate, which he wants to keep until the summer.

Having made five appearances for Argentina, he defined the impact of playing for the PSG star and his international ambitions.

“Playing with Messi is the best. When I was a kid I dreamed of it, he is my idol. You learn by looking at him on the pitch and from the outside too. He is the best player in the world. He is very simple and humble… He makes you learn many things,” he previously told the company Ambito.

“I dream of being in Qatar, because that’s what every footballer wants. Playing the World Cup is the best as an athlete.

“We won the South American Cup after so many years is a proud moment (sic) as an Argentine, and it is a pleasure to be a part of it. People needed it after this time of the pandemic. It was a prize for the whole country.”

Should he sign with City, he is unlikely to be added to the squad and would be loaned to a sister club in Europe.
