Local media reported that a Boston-area hospital refused to perform a heart transplant on a patient because he would not be vaccinated against Covid-19.

DJ Ferguson, 31, was said to have been front of the line to receive a transplant at Brigham and Women’s Hospital where he is fighting for his life, but hospital policy says he is no longer eligible because he has not had the Covid vaccine.

Speaking to CBS Boston, David Ferguson, the DJ’s father, said, “It kind of contradicts his core principles — he doesn’t believe in them,” adding that he “went to the brink of death to hang on to his gun and was pushed to the limit.”

DJ Ferguson’s father, David Ferguson, told CBS Boston: ‘He doesn’t believe in the ‘blow of Covid.

In a statement, the hospital said, “Like many other transplant programs in the United States – the Covid-19 vaccine is one of the many vaccines and lifestyle behaviors required for transplant candidates in the Mass General Brigham system in order to create the best chance of a successful operation as well as patient survival.” Life after transplantation.

DJ Ferguson’s family has remained by his side and support his choice, but they say they are not sure what they plan to do. They were thinking of moving it to another location, but it might be too weak to be moved.

Dr. Arthur Kaplan, chief of medical ethics at New York University’s Grossman School of Medicine, explained that vaccination is necessary for the type of procedure DJ Ferguson requires.

Dr. Arthur Kaplan told CBS News: “Post any transplant … Covid could kill you.”

“Post a transplant, kidney, heart whatever, your immune system is switched off,” said Dr. Kaplan. “The flu can kill you, a cold can kill you, and Covid can kill you.

“Organs are scarce, and we wouldn’t hand them out to someone who has a poor chance of surviving when others who have been vaccinated have a better chance of surviving after surgery.”

While the family said the father of two received excellent care at the hospital, they disagreed with its vaccination policy.

“I think my son fights bravely and has integrity and principles that he really believes in and that makes me respect him even more,” said David Ferguson. “It’s his body, it’s his choice.”
