Magnitude 6.2 earthquake strikes near Tonga

A major earthquake struck Thursday morning off the coast of Tonga.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the 6.2-magnitude earthquake occurred 136.1 miles west-northwest of the city of Bangai in Tonga at a depth of 14.5 km.

This comes just weeks after a massive volcanic eruption and subsequent tsunami devastated the island nation on January 15.
