There have been 17 quakes of at least magnitude 4.5 in Oklahoma’s recorded history, with all but three in 2011 or later. The 4.5 on Monday is tied with four others for the 13th strongest in state history.
“This is the most significant earthquake (in the state) in about three years,” Walter said.

He said the Oklahoma Geological Survey is working in tandem with the Oklahoma Corporation Commission — which regulates the oil and gas industry — to review data and coordinate discussion about what happened.
Walter said the data for wastewater disposal wells in the vicinity of the quake’s epicenter are several weeks behind. Well operators are required to record daily volumes but not in real time, he said, so they can be several weeks or months behind in reporting the data.
Walter said overall wastewater disposal volumes had been decreasing the past several years, pacing dramatic reductions in seismicity. Disposal rates in Oklahoma have plateaued the past year or so, he said.
He referenced a decade of significant volumes of drilling wastewater being disposed of into the deepest geological formation underground — especially in parts adjacent to that area of the state — in discussing how difficult it will be to potentially determine what roles current or historic injection played in triggering this earthquake.
