Old Trafford redevelopment plans part of Glazers’ PR offensive to win over Manchester United fans

[ad_1]

The Glazers have been trying to build bridges ever since, even if there are plenty of fans – sceptical, disillusioned or angry and wondering why it took a botched power grab to belatedly bring the owners to the table – who have had little interest in their apologies and promises. It is a battle for acceptance that the Americans, in reality, may never win, all the more so if the team continues to remain so dysfunctional on the pitch on their watch.

In an open letter to United fans last April, Glazer talked about “rebuilding trust with our fans”, as if the trust was ever there to begin with. It was not but the owners are continuing to press ahead with their offensive offensive regardless. The fan advisory board, set up to strengthen dialogue between the club and supporters, was launched in December and Glazer attended the inaugural meeting the following month.

More significant still could be the fan share scheme, which will open a pathway for supporters to build a meaningful stake in the club. It is expected to involve a new class of fan shares which will carry the same high voting rights as the Class B held by the Glazers, who have sold off Class A shares down the years for large amounts of money but who retain complete control of the running of the club.

As for a new or redeveloped stadium, that would be the most eye-catching, not to mention costly, development of all, not only in terms of inflating revenue streams down the line but improving the matchday experience for fans and providing a truly worthy home of a club of that state.
