US Supreme Court ‘votes to overturn abortion rights in constitutional earthquake’

Nancy Pelosi, the Democrat Speaker of the House, said: “The Republican-appointed Justices’ reported votes to overturn Roe v Wade would go down as an abomination, one of the worst and most damaging decisions in modern history.

“Several of these conservative justices, who are in no way accountable to the American people, have lied to the US Senate, ripped up the Constitution and defiled both precedent and the Supreme Court’s reputation.”

The American Civil Liberties Union said: “The shift in the tectonic plates of abortion rights will be as significant as any opinion the court has ever issued.”

But Republican senator Tom Cotton said: “Roe was egregiously wrong from the beginning and I pray the court follows the Constitution and allows the states to once again protect unborn life.”

Fellow Republican senator Josh Hawley said: “I will say, if this is the court’s opinion, it’s a heck of an opinion. Voluminously researched, tightly argued, and morally powerful.”

He blamed Democrats for the leak from the Supreme Court.

Mr Hawley said: “The Left continues its on the Supreme Court with an assault meant of confidentiality, clearly to intimidate.

“The justices mustn’t give in to this attempt to corrupt the process. Stay strong.”

Planned Parenthood, which operates abortion clinics around the country, said it was “outrageous”.

The organization said: “The report makes clear that our deepest fears are coming true. We have reached a crisis moment for abortion access.”

Gregory Meeks, a Democrat congressman representing New York, said: “It’s horrible. It’s a game-changer for America. It will be devastating to who we are as a people in the United States of America.”

Roe v Wade ‘has deepened division’, says court

The draft opinion would also overturn a 1992 decision – Planned Parenthood v Casey – that upheld the right to abortion.

Planned Parenthood v Casey guaranteed a woman’s right to an abortion until the foetus is viable outside the womb, typically around 22 to 24 weeks.

Justice Alito, who was nominated to the Supreme Court by President George W Bush, wrote: “We hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled.

“Far from bringing about a national settlement of the abortion issue, Roe and Casey have enflamed debate and deepened division.”
