Ronaldo may not have played as much as he would have liked during the competition after losing his place in the starting line-up following a fallout with coach Fernando Santos.

Now in the final years of his career, Ronaldo has refused to discuss whether his international playing career is over, but in an emotional statement on social media the former Manchester United forward said his ‘dedication to Portugal has not changed’.

He wrote on social media: “Winning the World Cup for Portugal was the biggest and most ambitious dream of my career.

“Fortunately, I won many titles of international dimension, including for Portugal, but putting the name of our country at the highest level in the world was my biggest dream.

“I fought for it. I fought so hard for that dream. In the five matches I’ve scored in World Cup finals over the course of 16 years, always alongside great players and with the support of millions of Portuguese, I gave my best.

“I left everything on the field. I never turned my face to fight and I never gave up on that dream.

“Unfortunately, the dream ended yesterday. It’s not worth reacting to the heat.”

He added, “I just want everyone to know that so much has been said, so much written, so much speculated, but my dedication to Portugal has not changed for a moment.

“I was always someone else fighting for everyone’s goal and I would never turn my back on my team mates and my country.

“At the moment, there isn’t much to say. Thank you Portugal. Thank you Qatar. It was a beautiful dream while it lasted…Now, it’s time for us to be a good advisor and let everyone draw their own conclusions.”

Ronaldo’s statement led to responses from some of the biggest names in world football as Pele wrote: “Thanks for making us smile my friend,” before Kylian Mbappe reacted with a crown, praying hand and goat emoji.
