TAIPEI (Reuters) – A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Taiwan on Thursday, the island’s meteorological bureau said, with no immediate news of damage.

Eyewitnesses said the quake shook buildings in the capital, Taipei. The office said the quake occurred at a depth of 5.7 kilometers.

Taiwan is located near the junction of two tectonic plates and is prone to earthquakes.

More than 100 people were killed in an earthquake in southern Taiwan in 2016, while a 7.3-magnitude quake killed more than 2,000 people in 1999.
