Ruud Gullit has told England the country’s biggest problem is the number of stars who play abroad in key positions in the Premier League. The Three Lions again failed to win a World Cup after being knocked out by France in the quarter-finals with Jordan Pickford, Harry Maguire, John Stones, Declan Rice and Harry Kane all singled out as players who should be at a higher level or claim more matches.
England’s long wait for an international title continued after their disappointing quarter-final defeat in Qatar, as the 1966 World Cup victory was still the only occasion on which the country lifted any significant international titles in the men’s game.
While performances in the Middle East were encouraging, it wasn’t enough to end a long drought with interest already beginning to turn on how to turn the nation’s fortunes around.
Now Gullit has offered his take on England’s plight, pointing out that there are not enough Englishmen in key positions in the Premier League.

“The wonderful thing about the World Cup is that every generation has to set an example,” he said. “England were prematurely eliminated in this tournament despite a great performance against France. They played really well but again they just couldn’t survive.”
“Today’s generation in England has not seen 1966 and in all previous tournaments only penalty shootouts that failed.
“Also, with the Premier League, England have the most beautiful and biggest league in the world, but the top five clubs don’t have English players playing in the most important positions. It kills the national team – there should be England players there, as they then get used to winning trophies.” The big ones all the time. You earn more with the big clubs.”
The Dutchman singled out five players who epitomized the problem with Pickford, Maguire, Stones, Rice and Kane all either not playing at high enough levels or playing frequently enough.

He said: “Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford plays at Everton, not one of the top five clubs. Among the main defenders, Harry Maguire is on the bench at Manchester United. John Stones plays at Manchester City but not always.
Declan Rice, a dominant midfielder, plays at West Ham United and Harry Kane is a striker at Tottenham, where he has a team that hasn’t won a trophy in years.
“This is the biggest problem for England. The team always plays well, but they can’t make the final move.”
England’s next competitive match will take place on March 23 as the Three Lions take on Italy in their opening match of the Euro 2024 qualifiers.
