On January 6, 2021, a mob overtook police, injuring several officers, stormed the US Capitol, and interrupted the certification of Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election.
This came after Trump made unfounded allegations of widespread election fraud.
The panel presented previously unseen evidence of an interview with Hope Hicks, the former Trump White House communications director.
Ms Hicks said she told Mr Trump, after the election, that he was “damaging his legacy” with the fraud allegations.
She said Mr Trump told her: “No one will care about my legacy if I lose, so it won’t matter. The only thing that matters is winning.”
The committee’s decision followed interviews with more than 1,000 witnesses and a series of explosive public hearings.
“Insurrection is a rebellion against the authority of the United States,” said Jimmy Raskin, the Democratic committee member. “It is a serious federal crime contained in the Constitution itself.”
“The Commission has developed significant evidence that President Trump intends to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power under our Constitution.”
Guilty said Trump would need “help” or “help and comfort” for the uprising.
The panel consisted of seven Democratic members of Congress and two anti-Trump Republicans. She voted unanimously to recommend impeachment.
