The King arrived in Norfolk today as he prepares to spend his first Christmas as monarch.
The Royal Standard flies over the Norfolk estate as Charles and the Queen Consort will celebrate Christmas Day with their family – marking a return to traditional royal celebrations.
The gathering at Sandringham will be the first time the royal family has spent Christmas at the private royal residence since 2019.
The Prince and Princess of Wales and their children are expected to join the King and his wife, along with the Princess Royal and her family and the Earl and Countess of Wessex and their children.
The Duke of York and his ex-wife, Sarah, Duchess of York, are understood to be on the estate, but it’s unknown if Andrew – whose reputation was left in tatters due to a civil citizenship case he settled out of court – will make a public appearance.
During the Covid pandemic, the late Queen spent the holidays at Windsor Castle, separated from her wider family during lockdown, for two years in a row – the first with the Duke of Edinburgh.
Royal birthdays feature a morning excursion to St Mary Magdalene Church, greetings to well-wishers, and a family brunch with turkey and all the trimmings.
Charles pre-recorded his first Christmas broadcast as King, which is likely to reflect on the loss and legacy of his mother.
Traditionally, members of the royal family sit down to watch the televised address when it airs after lunch, usually at 3 p.m.
Sandringham House has been the private home of four generations of British royalty for more than 160 years and is now the property of the King.
The financial donation has also been passed on to the Fuel Bank Foundation along with an undisclosed donation from Charles via The Prince of Wales’ Charitable Trust.
Matthew Cole, President of the Foundation, said: “We are extremely grateful for His Majesty’s kind and generous donation.
“The money will be used to help keep vulnerable people warm this winter, providing some physical and mental relief from the challenges posed by the energy crisis and the cost of living.”
The charity provides emergency assistance to people who live without heat, light and power in their homes because they cannot afford to prepay gas or electricity meters.
