Manchester United are “fully” expecting to complete a deal for PSV winger Cody Jaco, with the club giving the green light to a January transfer, TEAMtalk understands.
United’s main focus next month is on replacing Cristiano Ronaldo, with Gakko leading the list of favorites to add some attacking depth after an impressive first half to the season for club and country.
The 23-year-old is the Netherlands’ top scorer with three goals and reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup. This has added to his impressive tally at club level, as Gakpo has scored 36 goals in just 34 matches this season.
The price tag for the winger appeared to spiral out of control at one point, having risen from £35m last summer when United were first interested in £65m following his exploits in Qatar.
However, The Telegraph reported earlier this week that United’s initial bid of £43m was only £2m of what PSV were realistically looking for.
A report in the Daily Mirror on Christmas Eve said talks were already under way.
United expects the arrival of huge new funds
Well TEAMtalk can take that a step further after our transfer team member Graeme Bailey told us the Red Devils are fully anticipating a deal across the line in the new year.
Bailey said: “Cody Gakbo is now emerging as Manchester United’s top target of the year and the club hierarchy has given the go-ahead for his arrival and we fully expect that to happen.
“United have done their homework on him and are ready to move to the North West.
“Erik ten Hag has wanted Gakpo since the summer, and he doesn’t deny it. He fully believes he offers something they don’t have – we’re not sure if that’s a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo.
“Ten Hag is clearly building something at Old Trafford and the United hierarchy believes in him. Part of that is supporting him, letting him make the decisions.
“I firmly believe this is the right path for United and we see it, as with David de Gea’s decision as well.
“Is Gakpo a gamble? Of course, any Eredivisie player – we’ve seen that over recent years… For every Luis Suarez, there’s Alfonso Alves, Matija Kezman or Davy Klassen… But Ten Hag clearly believes that Gakpo has all the qualities that would enable him to succeed in England.”
United return to action on December 27 when they host Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford.
