Protesters clashed with police in Paris during demonstrations after three people were killed in a Kurdish cultural centre.

Kurdish activists, left-wing politicians and anti-racism groups took to the streets of the French capital to protest the shooting, which is believed to have been racially motivated.

Three other people were injured in the attack, and there were concerns about hate crimes in the country as a result.

The Paris prosecutor’s office said a 69-year-old man, who was known to the authorities, was arrested over the incident and faces charges of racially motivated murder and attempted murder.

He was wounded during the shooting while in custody.

Thousands gathered on the Place de la Republique in eastern Paris on Christmas Eve, waving an array of flags representing rights groups, Kurdish political parties and other issues.

The gathering was largely peaceful, but some youths threw projectiles and clashed with police who fired tear gas, while others chanted anti-Turkish government slogans.

Some protesters managed to overturn a police car.

The Kurdish community was shaken by the attack, as police sought to allay their fears by putting officers on extra alert over the Christmas holidays.

The attack took place on Friday at a cultural center, a nearby restaurant and a hairdresser’s, where Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said the suspect was clearly targeting foreigners.

Kurdish activists said that the police recently warned them about threats to Kurdish websites.

In 2013, three Kurdish activists were found shot dead in Paris, including Sakın Kansiz, the founder of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
