Police named the woman who was shot dead in a Merseyside pub on Christmas Eve as Elle Edwards.
The 26-year-old was celebrating the holiday season with her sister and friends when a gunman shot her in the head at the Lighthouse Inn in Wallasey Village.
Police said the beautician was not the target of the shooting, as four men were also injured. A 28-year-old man remained in critical condition in hospital.
Staff at Nova Hair and Beauty Studio, the beauty salon where Edwards worked, said they were “absolutely at a loss for words” after her death.
They added on Instagram: “Heaven has won the most beautiful angel. We are all heartbroken, thinking of all your family now Elle.
On Sunday, Christmas Day, Merseyside Police opened a homicide investigation and appealed to anyone with information about the shooting, which took place in a “busy place full of young people”, to come forward.
Police were called to the scene at 11.50pm on 24 December shortly after the gunman escaped in a darkened car, believed to be a Mercedes.
Investigators said they had received an “overwhelming response”, particularly from witnesses to the events, but would rely heavily on information provided by the public.
At a news conference the day after the killing, Det Supt Sue Combes, who is leading the investigation, said: “Tragically, the victim, a 26-year-old woman, was seriously injured by a gunshot wound to the head. She was taken to Arrowe Park Hospital but unfortunately passed away afterwards.” Soon, her family is informed, and today, which should be a day for friends to celebrate, they are dealing with this tragic loss.
“It is the early stages of the investigation, but we do not believe that the victim in this case has been targeted. She was enjoying Christmas with her sister and friends at a time that should have been quiet. What her family is going through now is incomprehensible. At this stage of the investigation we are trying to determine the motive.” and the circumstances surrounding this callous shooting.”
Lighthouse said she was assisting the police with the investigation and provided them with television footage of the killing.
The pub managers said the shooting was a “tragedy beyond any words,” adding: “All of our thoughts are with the friends and families of our clients, and in particular our hearts are with the family of our client who lost their lives.”
