Miguel Almiron scored his ninth goal of the season in Newcastle United’s 3-0 victory over a dismal-looking Leicester City side at the King Power Stadium to propel the Magpies into second place in the table.
Despite playing two more times, Eddie Howe’s side’s victory saw them move past Manchester City into second place, and four points behind leaders Arsenal.
Chris Wood and Joelinton were also top scorers alongside leading man Almiron as the Toon Army enjoyed an electric restart to the Premier League season.

Daniel Amartey clumsily brought down Joelinton in the penalty area within 60 seconds as the midfielder was heading towards the goal. With Callum Wilson out of the squad, Wood happily went forward to chip the ball into the middle of Danny Ward’s goal to give Newcastle an early advantage.
Almiron picked up where he left off before the World Cup break when he doubled the Magpies’ lead with a neat finish behind Ward after a fine move.
Kieran Tripper received a cross from Bruno Guimarães and sent a looping pass down the right for Newcastle to run in for Almiton. The Paraguayans chased the ball down and cut inside as Guimaraes cut through in the middle, who made a powerful run to join the attack, before returning the pass for a quick one-two completion as Leicester’s defense split. Almiron to run and poke the ball behind Ward.
And with the game over half an hour, Jolinton rose high from a Trippier corner to score third as Newcastle put the game out of reach for Leicester just before half-time.
Brighton also shone in its match against struggling Southampton, scoring two goals in good condition before the break, thanks to Adam Lallana’s header and Romain Peraud’s own goal.
Solly Marsh added a third minute before the hour mark with a superb left footed shot from 30 yards, which whizzed past Gavin Bazuno before falling into the top left corner.
James Ward-Prowse scored a consolation goal with just over 16 minutes of normal time remaining, following up a rare missed penalty with a header into the empty net.
The result saw Brighton move up to sixth with Southampton slipping to the foot of the table, one point behind 18th-placed Wolves and two points behind 19th-placed Everton they faced at Goodison Park.
And it looked as if the points would be shared until a last-gasp winner from Rayan Ait Nouri earned Wolves three special points for moving inside a safe spot in Julen Lopetegui’s first match in charge.
Yerry Mina gave Everton the early lead with a header from a corner kick that was perfectly executed by Dwight McNeil, before Daniel Podence canceled out the 22nd-minute opener with a sneaky finish at the back post.
However, it was Nuri’s thunderous close-range goal five minutes into extra time that stole all three points for Wolves.
There was more drama at Selhurst Park as Fulham made the most of a depleted Crystal Palace side, who had two players sent off.
Fulham took the lead through Bobby Reid on the half-hour mark, and got a boost when Terek Mitchell was sent off four minutes later for a late challenge on Kenny Tete.
James Tomkins picked up a second yellow card in the 57th minute, and this is where Fulham scruffed the game. Tim Ream added a second before Aleksandar Mitrovic’s inevitable header sealed all three points.
Tottenham were playing at Brentford earlier in the day and came from two goals down to pick up a point, with Harry Kane and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg top scorer for the visitors.
Liverpool travel to Aston Villa later in the afternoon, and league leaders Arsenal host West Ham United in the evening.
