Romanian police arrested Andrew Tate for human trafficking and rape

An influential social media official, Andrew Tate, said he will remain in prison in Romania for another 30 days, after he was arrested on charges of human trafficking, rape and forming an organized criminal group.

Prosecutors had asked the Bucharest court to extend his detention by 30 days.

Tate, a British citizen previously banned from social media platforms for his misogynist views and hate speech, was arrested Thursday along with his brother Tristan and two Romanian suspects, according to officials who raided their Bucharest property.

The four will be held for 30 days during the investigation, after a judge extended their initial detention by 24 hours, Ramona Paula, of the anti-organised crime agency Decco, said. It said the decision was not final and the defendants could appeal.

Prosecutors said, “It appears that the four suspects … created an organized criminal group with the intent of recruiting, housing, and exploiting women by forcing them to create pornographic content intended to be seen on specialized websites at a cost.”

Prosecutors say they have found six women who were sexually abused by the suspects.

A model and an ex-police worker are believed to be the two other suspects arrested with Andrew Tate in connection with an investigation into allegations of human trafficking and an allegation of rape.

While it has yet to be confirmed by Romanian police, two women named Luana Radu, 32, and Georgiana Nagel, 28, have been arrested for serving as Tate’s “closest aides”, according to the Daily Mail.

Radu was a former sub-inspector in the Romanian Police while Nagel has been described as a businesswoman who is said to be having an affair with Tate.

Tate has also been removed from Facebook and Instagram. A Meta spokesperson told The Independent that Tate was banned from both platforms for violating its policies, citing the company’s guidance on “risky individuals and organisations”.

A tweet posted on Saturday night while he was still behind bars read: “God is on our side, so the Matrix will not win. God willing.”

An earlier tweet from the former kickboxer’s account appeared to respond to the arrest, saying, “The Matrix sent their agents.” Another said, “The Matrix will only tell you what the Matrix wants you to believe.”

Tate is known for posting misogynistic views online and has previously been banned from social media platforms for hate speech.

A rights group called GRETA (Group of Experts in Action Against Human Trafficking) has drawn attention to crime in Romania last year, even as far-right influencer Andrew Tate was detained by authorities in the country on Thursday.

In a June 2021 press release, Greta urged Romania to ensure that human trafficking offenses lead to effective and dissuasive penalties and that victims of trafficking receive compensation.

The report also noted that Romania remains predominantly a country of origin for victims of human trafficking.

The group’s press release from a year ago resurfaced after Tate got into a controversy with climate activist Greta Thunberg on Twitter.
