Officials said waves of Russian drones targeted infrastructure in the Ukrainian capital overnight, causing some power outages, while Vladimir Putin’s forces continued bombing them until the second day of 2023.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said Monday morning that 40 drones “bound for Kyiv” exploded overnight, according to the Air Defense Forces, and they were all destroyed.
He said 22 drones were destroyed over Kyiv, three in the remote area and 15 over neighboring provinces.
The mayor said that an infrastructure facility in the capital was damaged and an explosion occurred in a neighborhood of the city. It was not immediately clear if this was caused by drones or other munitions.
President Volodymyr Zelensky praised Ukrainians for showing their gratitude to the troops and each other, and said Russia’s efforts would prove futile.
Of the Russians, he said: “Drones, missiles and everything else won’t help them.” “Because we stand united. They are only united by fear.”

A Russian attack on a town in southern Ukraine left five people injured, three seriously, according to local officials.
Kherson governor Yaroslav Yanushevich said the shells hit the town of Preslav on the Dnipro River, about 30 miles east of the regional capital left behind by Russian forces in November.
He said the shots supposedly came from a tank in Kakhovka across the river, where Russian forces are still.
At the moment, about 5 are known to be injured. Three people are in serious condition. They will be taken to Kherson, where doctors will provide the victims with the necessary medical assistance.

The latest Bill Trew article on the conflict in Ukraine: So devastating was the conflict, causing the worst refugee and humanitarian crisis in Europe, that it unfortunately overshadowed other global disasters and other wars. The global spotlight is on extraordinary scenes captured in now-iconic images and words.
But as a bitter artillery war rages on, lines solidify, and bloody battles continue with increasingly few gains, my fear is that after that anniversary of the Russian invasion next month, fatigue will finally set in. This is what Putin stands for. banking. It will be the job of journalists and aid workers alike to keep the story alive and relevant.
To some extent, exhaustion has already set in. As with many of the struggles I’ve covered, getting the world’s attention feels like an hourglass. Syria, a conflict that has dragged on for 12 grueling years, has been talked about so little on global news platforms that I regularly wonder if the war is over. Few have an idea of the state of the Libyan government, a country ravaged by a similarly long war.

Russia and Ukraine are struggling to create a major highway – Ministry of Defense
Britain’s Ministry of Defense said tensions over a major Russian supply route appeared to have escalated in recent days.
The fighting around the P66 near Krymina follows reports from Ukrainian officials that Russia was moving large amounts of troops and equipment into the northwest region of Luhansk.
In an update on the Ukraine war, the Defense Ministry said Monday: “For the past five days, Russian and Ukrainian forces have likely been fighting for control of the P66 highway, north of the Russian-controlled town of Luhansk Oblast.
The P66 is a major supply route for the northern part of Russia’s Donbas Front from the Belgorod region of Russia.
Its use has been held up by Ukrainian artillery since October, but if Ukraine is able to secure the route, it will likely undermine Russia’s defense of Kremina even further.

Sirens sounded just before midnight in Kyiv and much of eastern Ukraine, and were still wailing two hours later.
Kyrylo Tymoshenko, Ukraine’s presidential aide, said the wreckage of a drone fell on a road in the Desnyansky district in northeastern Kyiv, damaging a building next to it.

“All emergency services are on site. As a result of the strike, the power supply facility was damaged and there is no electricity.
Earlier Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory targeted military infrastructure. Kremlin officials have accused Ukraine of carrying out attacks last month on Russian airports, but Kyiv has not claimed responsibility.
