Senior defense sources also told The Telegraph that while it is “normal” for soldiers to analyze their shooters to write a report after the operation, “it is not normal to talk about it”.
Lord Hutton of Furness, who served as defense secretary from 2008 to 2009, said talking about the number of people he had killed “underestimates him”.
He told LBC Radio: “I think this is not what we would expect from someone who held the positions of power and responsibility that he held in the past. I think it is a huge mistake on his part.”
As General Sir Richard Barrons, former Deputy Chief of the Defense Staff, told LBC: “My point is, you don’t talk about these things. These are things that happen on the battlefield and there is little advantage in saying anything publicly.”
Meanwhile, Peter Leahy, the former chief of the Australian Army, said: “By skeptical about his killings, he is breaking a long line of tradition that says professional soldiers don’t talk about these things.
People closely involved in the events know what happened, and it’s not something you should be overly proud of even though you did it in the pursuit of national security.
“It’s something that some people struggle with — the fact that they get involved in killing people on the battlefield — that they can revisit later on.”
A Ministry of Defense spokesman said: “We do not comment on operational details for security reasons.”
It was reported on Friday that Prince Harry was allowed to leave his Apache helicopter base after announcing a random drug test in May 2011. It comes after he revealed in his diary that he had used drugs in the past.
RAF Wattisham base in Suffolk was secured by armed guards but the Duke was given permission to return to London on an urgent business, according to The Sun.
However, the newspaper reported that he had just returned from London.
There is no indication that Prince Harry took any drugs while in the armed forces, which have a zero tolerance policy towards drugs.
