A tsunami warning has been withdrawn for parts of the South Pacific region hours after the 7.0-magnitude earthquake in Vanuatu.

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake has struck the South Pacific nation of Vanuatu, the US Geological Survey said, prompting a tsunami warning for the area that was withdrawn hours later.

The quake hit around 11:30 pm local time (12:30 GMT) on Sunday. The agency said that the missile was centered 23 km from Port Olry and struck at a depth of 27 km.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the tsunami threat it issued for the nearby coast of Vanuatu had passed.

Some Vanuatu residents fled to higher ground after the warning was first issued.

Kayson Burr, a 22-year-old student from Hog Harbor Village in Espiritu Santo, said he felt a “very huge” tremor of the ground.

“We were right on the sea,” he said, “we were looking for lobsters on the coast.” We ran for our lives and then ran home.

At his home in the village of about 1,000 people, Burr said, the quake caused objects to fall to the floor and cups to break in the kitchen.

He added, “People were heading to higher ground” for fear of the tidal wave. But Burr said he did not see any structural damage to homes in his village.

There have been no reports of damages or losses so far.

Vanuatu has a population of 280,000 and is made up of dozens of islands. It sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates collide, and is subject to frequent seismic and volcanic activity.

In November, a neighboring island nation north of Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, was hit by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake. There were no reports of serious injuries or damage.

Coastal areas in nearby Papua New Guinea have been placed on alert for tsunamis of up to 30 cm (12 in).

The French Embassy in Vanuatu advised people to stay away from the coasts in a post on its official Facebook page.
