7.9 magnitude earthquake hits Indonesia

A tsunami warning issued for Indonesia after a massive 7.9-magnitude earthquake has been canceled by the seismological agency BMKG, downgrading the quake’s magnitude to 7.5.

Indonesia’s seismological agency BMKG has canceled a tsunami warning issued after an earthquake was recorded earlier today. Since then the magnitude of the earthquake has been reduced from 7.9 to 7.5, which is still a strong earthquake.

A strong earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale was recorded at noon today, Monday, January 9, with its epicenter about 368 kilometers (229 miles) northeast of East Timor in the Banda Sea, near the Tanimbar Islands off the coast of Indonesia.

According to the Indonesian earthquake agency BMKG, the tremor was initially recorded as 7.9 but was recorded at 7.6 by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The earthquake reportedly occurred under the sea floor at a depth of 95 km.

Seismologists and residents alike have reported tremors from this massive earthquake as far away as Darwin in Australia. The earthquake occurred in the early hours of Tuesday 10 am local time (5:47 pm UTC). There were no reports of injuries or damages due to the quake.
