A jumbo jet with a space rocket strapped under its wing has successfully taken off on the first stage of its mission to complete the first-ever launch into orbit from British soil. He was met with cheers and cheers from a crowd of spectators who created a festive atmosphere on a windswept grandstand side in Cornwall.
Despite the bitterly cold January weather and the late hour on a Monday night, more than 2,000 people gathered at Newquay Airport, now called Spaceport Cornwall and Britain’s first operational spaceport, along with food carts, pubs, big screens and a silent disco.
