Gary Neville was very impressed with Wilfried Genonto’s performance in Leeds’ 2-1 defeat by Aston Villa on Friday night.
Leeds dominated the game at Villa Park but another defeat means Jesse Marsh’s side are now two points clear of the relegation zone.
There were Leeds fans calling for Marsh’s sacking at the stadium but the traveling support would be impressed by Genonto, who caused Villa defender Young to not finish.
Neville drooled at the 19-year-old’s screen, praising his movement, body form and brain power to deal with Young kicking him from pole to post.
“He’s absolutely fantastic. It’s the first time I’ve seen him live, and knowing what a good left winger he is, his movement to get the ball and his body form to receive the ball is absolutely fantastic,” said Neville.
He’s stubborn, too. That’s what you want from your players. He’s like ‘Come on, Ashley Young kick the hell out of me.’ Ashley Young would do, that’s what I would do against a 19-year-old who looks as good as he looks.
His movement was really good. I can watch it all day. He already knows the game at 19. He knows what position he’s in. He’s hanging right on the offside line and making it difficult for Young and doing these double moves.”
Marsh insisted after the game that he was “more positive than ever” after his team’s performance.
He said: “I’m totally focused on our team. I understand the pressure that comes with expectations at a club like Leeds. I’m much more positive than I’ve been since I’ve been here.
“When the team doesn’t win the coach will always be under a lot of pressure but I can handle that.
“There’s no panic, it’s really trying to start the way we want to play. If we do that, we have enough quality and intelligence to achieve our goals.
“In sport at some point you can be on top and lose. This is the most complete performance since I’ve been here and the best example of how I think a team can play. I’m in a positive place with our group.”
