After capturing the most wanted Italian mafia boss, Matteo Messina Denaro, his hometown in Sicily falls into two camps.
“Most people here are like me, they are very happy and feel free for the first time since they escaped 30 years ago,” said Elena Ferraro, 47, owner of a health center in Castelvetrano, “but there is a large group who have seen Messina Denaro protect them while they are mourning.”
As a member of the inner circle of the Sicilian mafia in the early 1990s, Messina Denaro, 60, launched a deadly bombing campaign across Italy, killing children and judges, protesting the gangsters’ harsh sentences, before escaping in 1993.
