And welcome to our coverage of the West Ham United and Everton match from the London Stadium. All the usual catchphrases and cliches were floating around in this game: “El Sackicko”, “hex drop pointer” and so on. Needless to say, they were used for a reason: both teams are in a tough spot in the league and in awful form lately.

West Ham initially enjoyed a revival after David Moyes took over but that faded and they are now embroiled in a real relegation battle, having picked up just one point in their previous six matches.

Moyes’ opposite number, Frank Lampard, managed to sweep Everton across the line and ensure their survival when he took over, but things have been on a downward spiral ever since. They have also had one point in their last six matches.

Perhaps, however, things are not as bad as they seem in context. A win for either side would keep them two points away from relegation and there are plenty of other sides in the mix, with two points separating the bottom seven, it’s a tight part of the table.

However, the situation looks bad for both men and the patience of the high-ranking officials of their club is endless. It’s uncertain if the loss is enough to decide the fate of Moyes or Lampard, but it doesn’t really seem out of the question.

Oddly enough, West Ham could lose today, as Moyes was sacked shortly after and then replaced Lampard at Everton on very short notice. In fact, Telegraph Sport reported on the same thing earlier this year:

West Ham were already deliberating about short- and long-term substitutions while agonizing over Moyes’ future.

But now there is a growing sense that they will have another defeat on their hands and that Moyes will be sacked.

Nuno Espirito Santo, Rafael Benitez and Sean Dyche are seen as potential firemen for West Ham, who would prefer to stick to just that date until the end of the season.
