Police said a worker died after being crushed by a hydraulic urinal yesterday in the heart of London’s West End.
Emergency services, including four fire engines and an ambulance, were called to Cambridge Circus at the junction between Shaftesbury Street and Charing Cross Road at 1pm immediately after an accident was reported.
The worker was freed after about 25 firefighters used a crane to lift the entire structure off the ground. Paramedics treated the man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the victim’s family has been notified. It is believed that he was working on maintaining the toilet.
A hydraulic, or telescopic, urinal is a pop-up facility that is stored underground during the day and used at night, mostly by people who have gone out to drink.
The incident occurred outside the Palace Theatre, which for several years was the setting for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Workers there said they heard sirens as emergency services arrived.
The London Fire Brigade said the man was “trapped below street level”.
Rising urinals are commonly used in the West End to provide relief to theater-goers and late-night drinkers.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “We regret to have to update that, despite the efforts of the emergency services, the man who sustained serious injuries at Cambridge Circus has been pronounced dead at the scene.
“His next of kin have been informed. The belts remain in place at the site.”
“It is believed that the man sustained crushing injuries while working on a telescopic urinal at the site,” he added.
A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called today at 1.05pm to reports of an incident in Shaftesbury Road, Charing Cross.
We have dispatched a number of resources to the scene, including an ambulance crew, members of the Hazardous Area Response Team, members of the Tactical Response Unit, and a medic in a rapid response vehicle.
“We also sent an air ambulance in London.”
The center of the capital was crowded as roads around the site were closed and buses were diverted.
