Jorginho’s arrival is perfectly timed
Mikel Arteta finally got the midfield reinforcement he wanted when Arsenal completed a £12m deal for Chelsea veteran Jorginho, writes Mark Irwin.
The League leaders have dealt a final blow to the 31-year-old Italy international after finally calling off their pursuit of Moises Caicedo at Brighton.
They were willing to pay the club £75m for the Ecuadorian international Caceido after two previous bids had been cancelled, but Brighton made it clear they would not sell at any price.
And the date of Jorginho’s arrival with Emirates could not be more perfect after it was confirmed that Mohamed Elneny is likely to miss the rest of the season after undergoing knee surgery.
Arteta was already short on options in midfield when Thomas Partey suffered a rib injury during last week’s FA Cup defeat to Manchester City.
And although scans confirmed that Barty’s injury was not serious, his absence during the second half at Al-Ittihad last week highlighted Arsenal’s lack of options in a key area of the team.
Jorginho has now arrived to fill that hole, signing an 18-month contract with the option for another year.
