Police said a four-year-old girl died after reports of a dog attack.

Officers were called by the Ambulance Service to a home in Milton Keynes shortly after 5pm on Tuesday.

Thames Valley Police said it was quickly confirmed that the child had died at the property, on Broadlands in the Netherfield area of the city.

The dog has since been humanely destroyed, and a heavy police presence remained at the scene throughout the night.

Officers said no one was hurt in the attack and no arrests were made in the investigation.

The girl’s family is supported by trained officers.

Supt Matt Bullivant said: “This is a very tragic incident, in which we believe a child was killed after being attacked by a dog.

“We are clearly in the early stages of the investigation, and it would be wrong and unhelpful to speculate on the exact circumstances of this incident at this point.

However, in order to ensure public safety, a decision was taken earlier this evening to exterminate the dog involved, and this was done in a humane manner.

“I understand the impact this has on the community and the wider public, and people can expect to see a significant police presence in the area this evening and beyond while our investigation continues.”

He said there was no reason to believe there was any danger to the general public.

“Anyone with concerns should feel free to approach our officers and ask questions, but I urge people not to speculate on circumstances, especially on social media platforms.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Thames Valley Police on 101 and refer to the incident at 20230131-1546.
