Rescuers pulled a dog alive from a collapsed building in southern Turkey, local media reported Thursday, three weeks after last month’s deadly 7.8-magnitude earthquake, bringing the death toll from the disaster to more than 50,000. Teams from a local municipality in central Turkey rescued Aleks on Wednesday and handed him over to Haytap, a Turkish animal protection association in the city of Antakya.

Haytap has rescued dogs, rabbits, cows and even birds from the rubble in Antakya, after receiving crying calls from their owners or neighbors.

In the organization’s tent, veterinarians provide care and treatment for injured animals.

Stories of animal rescue are a balm for the country, which has been left in shock by the worst natural disaster in Turkey’s post-Ottoman history.

Turkish officials put the death toll from the quake, along with a second 7.5-magnitude quake just nine hours later, at more than 45,000 people in Turkey alone. Government and aid workers in the rebel-held northern region have confirmed that nearly 6,000 people have been killed across the border in northern Syria.

A UK-based monitoring group, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on a network of sources in the rebel-held part of the civil war-torn country, said this week that the death toll had risen to nearly 7,000. But the official agencies have not updated their figures for several days.
