Overview
On February 6th, 2023, the Marash/Antibes earthquake, also known as the Kahramanmaras earthquake series, hit southern Turkey and northwestern parts of Syria. The main tremor had a magnitude of 7.8 and happened at a crucial moment, 4.15 am local time, when most people were asleep at home. It was a shallow earthquake with its epicenter located about 35 kilometers northwest of the Turkish city of Gaziantep. The magnitude 7.8 earthquake was followed by two large-scale earthquakes on the same day, with magnitudes of 7.5 and 6.7. More than 10,000 aftershocks were recorded and felt across the region. In the aftermath of the main earthquake, reports were received of the collapse of infrastructures and buildings in several regions in southern Turkey and major cities in northwest Syria such as Idlib, Aleppo, Latakia and Jableh. On February 20, 2023, another strong earthquake was recorded in the south of Hatay Province (Turkey) near the city of Samandag and the Syrian border.
