Arsenal could only salvage a 3-3 draw at home to bottom club Southampton on Friday, giving Manchester City the upper hand in a thrilling Premier League title race.

Three draws – the latest of which was a 3-3 thriller on Friday at home to bottom club Southampton – saw Arsenal relinquish control of the Premier League title race. Manchester City are now only five points behind and boast two games in hand, as well as an advantage at home in the decisive match next Wednesday.

Mikel Arteta and his team mates were just 27 seconds behind on the clock in the Emirates as Aaron Ramsdal botched a pass and was punished mercilessly. It was 2-0 soon after and despite Gabriel Martinelli’s response, the Saints managed to restore a two-goal advantage early in the second half, meaning late goals from Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka could only salvage the tie.

Odegaard cannot hide his frustration with Partey

Martin Odegaard cut a frustrated figure when team mate Thomas Partey decided to shoot from 30 yards into the dying embers of Friday’s disappointing draw. After captain Odegaard and superstar Saka equalized for Arsenal, the Gunners were given eight minutes of extra time to find the winning goal.

In the last 30 seconds, Barty collected the ball from distance and instead of passing, the powerful Ghanaian team decided to shoot and eventually volleyed the ball wide of the goal. Odegaard was one of the players available to pass, with the Norwegian ace showing his frustration by throwing his arms at his side and turning his back on Barty in dismay.

Mikel Arteta kicked every ball once again as Arsenal wilted away against struggling Southampton to dent their title hopes. The Spaniard was particularly mobile throughout the encounter, furious when his team intercepted and elated when they scored.

However, Arteta spent much of the night insisting his players calm down and maintain their composure on the field. After the match, the Gunners boss showed great character and downplayed that next Wednesday’s trip to Manchester is a must-win game.

Saka and Martinelli match Rooney and Ronaldo record

It wasn’t all bad for Arsenal on Friday. Indeed, for Boyako Saka and Gabriele Martinelli, the 21-year-old duo made Premier League history with their first Gunners goal.

Saka was the provider of Martinelli’s 20th-minute strike that reduced the deficit to just one goal. The goal means Saka and Martinelli join Manchester United icons Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo as the only teammates aged 21 and under to score 20 goals or more in a single Premier League season.
