Tottenham Hotspur sacked caretaker manager Christian Stellini after Sunday’s “absolutely unacceptable” performance against Newcastle, which the London side lost 6-1.
Stellini took over after fellow Italian Antonio Conte left “by mutual agreement” less than a month earlier. He was Conte’s assistant at the club.
He lost his job after Spurs allowed five goals in the first 21 minutes on Sunday.
Former Tottenham player Ryan Mason has become the caretaker manager for the second time following the departure of Stellini.
Tottenham are now out in the race for a Champions League place among the Premier League’s top four and sit six points clear of Manchester United – who they play on Thursday – despite having played two games more than the Red Devils.
And Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy announced Stellini’s sacking, and said in a statement: “Sunday’s performance against Newcastle was completely unacceptable. It was devastating to see that.”
“We can look at many reasons why this happened, and while the board, coaches and players and I must all bear collective responsibility, ultimately the responsibility lies with me.
Christian will leave his current position with his coaching staff.
“Christian has entered a difficult phase of our season and I would like to thank him for the professional way he treated his coaching staff during such a difficult time. We wish him and his staff all the best.”
Stellini, 48, was in his first full managerial role at Tottenham. He has mostly worked as Conte’s assistant in Italy since becoming a coach.
But Tottenham managed just one win in their four matches – a 2-1 win over Brighton.
They moved away from relegation-threatened Everton and were beaten by a late goal by Bournemouth last weekend.

Levy said Mason, 31, will take over coaching duties with immediate effect.
“Ryan knows the club and the players very well,” he said.
“I met the Players Committee today – the team is determined to work together to ensure the best possible end to the season.
“We are all very clear that we need to put on shows that earn your incredible support.”

Stellini was part of Conte’s backroom team at Tottenham and took over on a temporary basis. The plan was for him to stay in place until the end of the season when Tottenham would appoint a new permanent chairman.
In their final game on Sunday, Newcastle rioted and Tottenham were humiliated at St James’ Park.
Mason, 31, had previously taken over when Jose Mourinho was sacked in 2021, winning four of his seven games at the helm, which included a 1-0 Carabao Cup final defeat by Manchester City.
He has become the youngest manager in Premier League history and has once again been tasked with anchoring the ship as Tottenham try to salvage something from their season.
