The first full-scale digital replica of the Titanic has been created – and experts say it can be used to unlock the secrets of the world’s most famous shipwreck.
Scientists have created what they describe as a “digital twin” of the passenger liner, which sank in the Atlantic Ocean in 1912 after hitting an iceberg during its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York.
About 1,500 people died in the sinking – which remains one of the largest shipping disasters in world history.
The shipwreck’s digital twin was created using deep sea maps of the real Titanic, which lies 3,800 meters (12,500 feet) in the Atlantic Ocean.
It is so detailed that even the serial number on the blade of one of the ship’s propellers can be rendered in 3D.
Experts believe scientists could use the digital replica to work out new details about how the passenger ship sank.

“Changing the rules of the game”
Parks-Stevenson, an expert on the Titanic who has studied the ship for the past 20 years, called the project “a real game-changer.”
“What we are seeing for the first time is an accurate and true depiction of the wreckage site and the entire wreckage,” he said.
“I see details no one has seen before and this allows me to build on everything we’ve learned so far and see the wreckage in a new light.
“We have actual data that engineers can take to examine the real mechanisms behind the collapse and sinking and thus get closer to the true story of the Titanic disaster.
“For the next generation of Titanic exploration, research and analysis, this is the beginning of a new chapter.”

The Digital Twin was created by deepwater specialists Magellan using more than 715,000 photos and full 4K video footage of the wreck, taken using two submarines – called the Romeo and Juliet.
The submarines mapped every millimeter of the wreckage — which split in two as it sank — in meticulous detail. They also mapped a three-mile-long debris field surrounding the wreck.
Previous visual images of the ship were limited by low light levels and often poor water quality around the wreck.
Titanic “as you’ve never seen it before”
The company’s digital twin provides a “high-resolution photo-realistic 3D model” of the wreck, said Gerhard Seifert of Magellan, who led the expedition’s planning.
“This model will allow people to zoom out and look at everything for the first time,” he said.
“So by capturing this 3D model, what we can do is visualize the wreckage in a whole new way, there are all kinds of amazing little details that you can see.
“This is the Titanic as no one has seen it before.”

Magellan founder Richard Parkinson called his team’s project results “amazing.”
“Over the course of Project Titanic, the amount of data we acquired was massive – about 7,150,000 images and about 16 terabytes of data,” he said.
“We believe this data is approximately 10 times greater than any underwater 3D model that has been attempted before.”
