Unverified social media posts later speculated that the collision resulted from a police chase.

Urging people not to “speculate” online, the police said the incident actually took place before the officers arrived.

In a statement on Twitter, Cardiff, South Wales Police said: “Police continue to monitor and respond to unrest in Ely. A number of vehicles have been set on fire. Arrests are ongoing. There remains a significant police presence in the area.”

Earlier, the force said there were “a significant number of officers working to manage the collision,” but also to “calm the ongoing disturbances at the scene.”

“We urge anyone involved to leave the scene of the accident immediately and ask local residents to stay away until a safe conclusion can be reached,” police said.
