A few months after the earthquake in Turkey, Japan became the latest country to be hit by the disaster.
A powerful 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck Tokyo on Friday evening (May 26). Numerous buildings in the area shook but no major damage was reported as reported by NHK Times. The force was detected at a depth of 50 kilometers off eastern Chiba Prefecture on Friday at 7:03 p.m.
According to the Meteorological Agency, no tsunami warnings have been issued. Footage from NHK also showed buildings shaking near Narita Airport in Chiba. Meanwhile, East Japan Railways (JR East) said it will suspend some train services in Chiba Prefecture.
Just weeks ago, another 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck another region in Japan – Ishikawa. However, the previous earthquake claimed the lives of one person and injured at least 22 people.
According to the Japan Times, earthquakes are common in Japan as the place is one of the most active areas for disasters. The country accounts for a fifth of the world’s earthquakes, with a magnitude of at least six.
Back on March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9 earthquake hit the northeast coast, Japan’s most powerful earthquake ever, and a massive tsunami. Those events caused the world’s worst nuclear crisis since the Chernobyl disaster a quarter of a century ago.
As of May 26, the Malaysian Meteorological Department confirmed that there are no tsunami warnings for Malaysia.
