A powerful 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck New Zealand’s Auckland Islands on Wednesday, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC).

The islands off the south coast of New Zealand are still mostly uninhabited. The epicenter was reported to be 33 kilometers below the Earth’s surface. Initial reports are that there is no tsunami warning and no reports of damage in mainland New Zealand.

Invercargill is the closest city by size. A city council official told AFP that there was no news of an earthquake or damage to infrastructure.

New Zealand is still prone to earthquakes

Last month, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Kermadec Islands region near the country, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The depth of the quake was measured at about 10 kilometers, and initially, the USGS suggested the quake had a magnitude of 7.3. Despite the early tsunami threat, the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center later clarified that no natural disaster existed.

New Zealand always remains prone to earthquakes because it shares its boundary with two major tectonic plates in the world – the Australian Plate and the Pacific Plate.
