Manchester United acquisition: Erik ten Hag reveals ‘one plan’ to improve the club amid ongoing uncertainty

Rick ten Hag has vowed to “fight” for further improvements to Manchester United this summer as he develops a plan for further growth despite ongoing acquisition uncertainty.

The Red Devils enjoyed a very encouraging first season under their famous Dutch coach, returning to the top four of the Premier League and Champions League next season thanks to a third-place finish domestically.

United also ended their six-year trophy drought by beating Newcastle at Wembley last February, and later reached the FA Cup final before narrowly losing to treble-chasing Manchester City on Saturday.

Ten Hag has made such an impressive progress on the back of so much uncertainty over Old Trafford’s ownership situation, with it announced that there is no preferred bidder for the club from the Glazer family.

Ineos founder Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Qatari Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani are the two remaining parties in the race to take the helm at United, with reports in recent days that the latter may make a fifth bid in order to win the race.

It’s hardly an ideal situation in which to approach a crucial summer transfer window, which opens next week with United needing major upgrades – particularly up front – in order to continue their progress.

Asked about possession again following United’s FA Cup loss, Ten Hag told reporters at Wembley: “I only have one plan: to improve this club and improve this team. I’m going to fight for [it]. I have my ideas and I have already told the club what we need to do for that.

“But I have to work with my staff, with the players to be better next season. I think at this moment, I don’t want a discussion [the takeover]. It’s about putting the finishing touches on for the season.

“We have to be calm, analyze the season, dig into the details, draw the right conclusions, and then take action. It’s about that.”

“This process, during the season, we’re constantly putting considerations and procedures into the process. But now the season is over, the conclusion overall is we’ve had a great season.

“It’s not about the gap in the summer, it’s not about signing players and they’re doing well. It’s about working all season and day in and day out to develop the squad and make progress in the squad.

“I’m very proud of where we came from at the start of the season. Remember Brentford and the Etihad too. Now, we showed today against City that winning at home was no accident, and on another day, we could have won that game.”
