The mayor of the Lari district, José Banta Mamani, asked for his support to rebuild the Purisima Concepcion Church and the earthquake-damaged houses.
A tower has collapsed in a church in southern Peru due to a series of earthquakes there in recent days.
According to RPP Noticias, the tower, which has already suffered damage from an earthquake in 2016, is located in the Church of Purísima Concepción (The Most Serene) in the Colca Valley in the Lari District of the Cailoma Province of the Arequipa Region.
The foundations of the church and 12 other churches are in danger of collapsing due to the state of their infrastructure after the magnitude 2.7 to 5.5 earthquakes.
The Mayor of Kailuma, Alfonso Mamani, said it was necessary for the Ministry of Culture to intervene in order to rehabilitate and maintain all the churches already damaged in the 2016 earthquake. This earthquake has displaced more than 250 families.
Although there have already been projects to restore the churches, new appraisals are now necessary due to the recent damage.
The mayor of the Lari district, José Banta Mamani, asked for his support to rebuild the Purisima Concepcion Church and the earthquake-damaged houses.
“Our reservoirs are damaged; they have shifted, and they could collapse at any time. I just want to ask our authorities forcefully; I hope that this time they focus on these places we have to go.”
“Otherwise, as I said, Kailoma County is on the way to disappearing, because there is no longer any hope of anything, because everything has been damaged,” he said.
The epicenter of the earthquakes was in the Maca region. The earthquakes also destroyed many homes in nearby areas such as Tesco, Lari, Icobamba and Acoma.
Due to the emergency, the Kailuma County Municipality has set up tents in the Maca district, where residents have been able to spend the night.
Other damage included landslides on highways and in the Madrigal area.
