Rishi Sunak is preparing for another potentially damaging by-election after another Conservative MP stepped down.
David Warburton has resigned after revealing he has been denied a fair hearing by the Parliamentary Harassment Oversight Body looking into allegations he made unwanted advances to two women. His decision will lead to another by-election for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
In Mr Warburton’s resignation letter, he said he had “no choice” but to stir up “by-election turmoil”, adding: “I hope that by doing so I can throw light freely on the methods of a system of oversight not fit for purpose, so that friends and colleagues at home From seeing the perverted process by which they can impose their own judgments at any time.”
Warburton denied the molestation allegations but admitted to using cocaine after drinking “incredibly strong” Japanese whiskey with a third woman, The Mail on Sunday reports.
He claimed she secretly photographed and photographed him after a late-night House of Commons vote.
“I was made up,” said Mr. Warburton, “but I was incredibly naive and stupid.”
Daniel Greenberg, the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, has accepted the allegations of a political aide against the MP.
A Conservative Party spokesperson said: “The Independent Complaints and Grievances System is an independent body set up by Parliament and its operations are respected by the Conservative Party. Mr Warburton pulled the whip over these complaints last April and has not sat in Parliament as a Conservative since.”
The prime minister now faces four possible by-elections with challengers in Uxbridge and South Ruislip. Selby and Einstey were already scheduled for July 20 following the resignations of Boris Johnson and his ally Nigel Adams.
Nadine Dorries, who also announced she was resigning due to the fallout from the former prime minister’s resignation, will remain while she seeks to investigate how she was denied a seat in the Lords on the list.
Meanwhile, it turns out that leaked WhatsApp messages showed that Sir Bernard Jenkin had thrown a closing drinks ceremony on his wife.
The Conservatives held former Prime Minister Mr Johnson responsible for Partigitt’s role on the House of Commons Privileges Committee, which Johnson described as a “witch-hunt”.
