Danny Murphy believes that Steven Gerrard chose to join the agreement in order to improve his qualities as a coach.

The appointment of the Liverpool legend to the Saudi club was confirmed yesterday, despite his previous rejection of this move.

Simon Jordan was highly critical of Gerrard’s decision to go into the deal, stating that it was one that relied on money and left his reputation “in the toilet”.

But Gerrard’s former teammate, Murphy, defended the Liverpool legend.

“I spoke to him briefly when he was deciding the first time a few weeks ago,” Murphy revealed on Drive. “He turned down the job two weeks ago…

“In some ways it’s funny to talk about it, but he wanted a football project that he knew he could benefit from and really learn something and improve his training and get back to work if you like.

When he turned that down, my instinct was that he went, ‘There’s an opportunity here,’ which he thinks will be better for his long-term managerial career, which makes sense, forget finances.

“Because obviously, if you’re going to do great in the tournament for example and get promoted, that’s going to be listed on your resume. Whereas if you’re doing well in Saudi, it’s kind of impressive.” [it doesn’t mean anything]And if you do badly, it doesn’t really mean anything.

“So maybe that opportunity didn’t pan out, maybe they just threw more money at it. My understanding about Stephen generally is that he wants to succeed in whatever he does and even though we all lean towards the extra dough, he has a lot of dough.”
