Hello, and welcome to coverage of the Wimbledon men’s singles final between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz.
This match has everything you need to be an all-time classic tennis match. Defending champion Djokovic aims to win a record-equalling eighth men’s title, stay on track to win major calendar titles and return to the top of the world rankings.
The Cars are looking to claim a second major title, retain the number one ranking in the world and solidify their position as the present and future of men’s tennis. The two players met in the French Open semi-finals last month and Alcaraz lost in four sets after suffering a cramp.
Djokovic, who has won six of the last eight Grand Slams, believes peaking for the Grand Slam has been key to his success.
“It’s no secret that the Grand Slams are my top priority, the highest targets on my priority list,” he said. “Every time I start the season, I want to peak at these four tournaments. I try to organize my schedule, training schedule, preparation weeks and all tournaments around these priorities.
“All the tournaments I play basically lead me to a Grand Slam. I’m really happy because my Grand Slam seasons have been amazing this year, and it’s really been going on for several years. The results are great. I have a good team of people around me. We do things in a proper way on a daily basis. I think This gives us benefits when we get to the later stages of a Grand Slam. Perhaps most players are exhausted physically and mentally, or maybe they just don’t feel they can move on. But for me, I feel like the job is not over until I lift the trophy – I hope – and play in the finals of a tournament Grand”.
As for Alcaraz, he is confident that the nerves that were felt against Djokovic in Paris, will not be an issue today.
“I [will] Try to pull out all the nerves, try to enjoy the moment because maybe in the semi-finals at the French Open I didn’t enjoy it at all in the first set,” he said.
“I’m going to do something different for the match. Get ready [for] The match is a little different from the French Open. It will be different for me. I hope I don’t have a cramp during the final. I think I’ll be better on Sunday.”
