Manchester United is making progress in the search for the striker

Erik ten Hag says Manchester United are making progress in their bid to sign a new striker.

Rasmus Höglund is Manchester United’s main target and Ten Hag spoke to the Atalanta top scorer earlier this year.

United are unwilling to spend more than £60m on Hojlund after the 20-year-old moved to Atalanta from Sturm Graz for £15m a year ago.

“What I can say is that we are doing everything we can to make it happen,” said Ten Hag. “For me, as early as possible, the earlier the better, because we have to integrate him into the team, the way we play.

“In an ideal situation, he was already here but you don’t always get the ideal positions as a manager and you have to deal with the situation.

“We’re making progress, yes, but we know how it works and when we have it, we’ll tell you straight away. We’re underperforming [at goalscoring] We are aware of that. Others also have to contribute in that area, and so, we’re also looking for goal-scoring potential.

“At Mason Mount we have a player who is more capable of scoring goals, creating more and Rashford is in a position to score more goals, but we have to score more as a whole team.”
