Las Vegas police have identified a young boy who was found dead in a woodland 10 days ago and issued a murder warrant for his mother’s arrest.

Authorities used DNA to determine that the baby, previously known only as Little Zion, was Liam Husted, 7, of San Jose, California. They are now looking for Samantha Moreno Rodriguez, 35.

Mother and son left California in a blue Dodge Caliber on May 24 and headed to Southern California and then to Nevada. Moreno Rodriguez was last seen at a Denver hotel on May 31.

The cause of Liam’s death was not revealed, but police said he was the victim of a murder. Parker came on his body, lying on top of a road, a week ago.

Police initially drew up sketches of the child, which led to a woman falsely claiming the unidentified child was her own. It turns out that her son was on a camping trip with his father and brother.

Days later, a San Jose woman worried that she hadn’t seen Moreno Rodriguez or Liam in two weeks saw a sketch of “Little Zion” and noticed a similarity.

That woman, a family friend, called the San Jose police, who got in touch with the Las Vegas cops. Then a detective in Vegas flew to San Jose to get Liam’s clothes and pillow.

Then the crime lab confirmed a match between the DNA on the items and the boy who was found in the woods.

Lt. Ray Spencer, of the Las Vegas City Police, said he had to tell the boy’s father, who was reported missing on June 1, that he had died.

“It’s a heartbreaking conversation,” Spencer said at a news conference Monday.
