There’s an easy story to tell here: “On the same day Nikola Jokic was named NBA Most Valuable Player, Joel Embiid came out determined to explain why he was number one on the polls.” Even Doc Rivers, who has always been a friend of the working press, went ahead and sorted it out.
After the second game against Atlanta on Tuesday, the 76ers coach recalled what it was like to be a member of the 1994-95 Spurs, to watch David Robinson accept the Player of the Season award before the start of the Western Conference Finals against the Rockets…then watch Hakim Olaywan wreck” Admiral” completely, resulting in Houston winning six games en route to their second consecutive NBA Championship. What “Dream” did to Robinson in that series — proving himself to be peerless, even when put into another awesome context at all — isn’t the kind of thing you forget, especially when you have a front row seat.
“Tonight, I just felt like this was Joel,” Rivers told reporters after watching Embiid score 40 points, a new playoff high, in his team’s 118-102 win.
However, there are two problems with the easy story. For one thing, Embiid’s opponent in the second round of the 2021 NBA Playoffs wasn’t Nuggets Jokic. It’s The Hawks, led by the supernaturally talented playmaker Trae Young. (If we do get the Sixers-Nuggets Finals, though, oh my goodness, will it be impossible to avoid that particular story.) On the other hand…well, Embiid says he’s “frustrated” not to win but doesn’t seem to be interested in granting the hypothesis .

I’m sure Embiid would have accepted the MVP honor if he had won it. But for a player who has missed 295 games since enlisting in 2014, who has suffered two serious knee scars this season, including a meniscus tear less than two weeks ago, who is at the peak of his powers as the backbone of the knee. Ranked number one in the East, there are greater prizes to seek out, and no time like the present to hunt them down.
We avoid the easy story, then, and turn our focus to a simpler, but no less profound: Embiid wants to win everything damned. To do this, he has to get out of the second turn. To do that, he had to take the 76 out of the 0-1 hole they drilled on Sunday. So, you know, he did.
Embiid was outstanding in Game 2, outperforming his 39 points in Game 1 of the series – racking up 13 rebounds, two steals, two assists and a block to help Philly in his series knot with the Hawks in one game. The third game comes Friday in Atlanta, where Embiid fans at State Farm Arena Hawks fans will greet Embiid as warmly as Philly Young fans have, and where Embiid, the showman, will surely respond in kind.

Like nearly every other team Philadelphia has played this season, the Hawks haven’t had an answer for Embiid over two games. The 27-year-old set Clint Capella on fire, using a combination of physical bruising and ballet agility to shoot a 15-for-27 off the ground against his Atlanta counterpart while also making eight shooting fouls, according to the NBA Advanced Stats game. data. Capella is the only real center on the Hawks’ list. Every other option, from forwards John Collins and Danilo Gallinari to debutante Onyeka Okongwu, is simply too small to stand up to Embiid. And none of them can do much with the fully loaded Embiid, filled with a sinister array of counterfeits, punches, axes, and slots, all deployed to catch a defender who is meticulously leaning the wrong way at precisely the wrong time to give Joel the look he wants. exactly.
The results were pretty amazing: 79 points from 46 attempted shots and 31 free throws, which is good for a ridiculously effective .662 real shot percentage, in 73 total minutes over two games. Again: Embiid tore meniscus nine days ago.
Perhaps impressive, though, is what Embiid was able to do on the other end of the field in Game 2.
Young carved the Sixers into Game 1, getting wherever he wanted to go in a Pick-and-Roll and scoring 24 runs in the basket. He scored 19 of his 35 points and earned five of his 10 assists from those forays into the fairway, hitting his man – mainly Danny Green – from the jump, pulling the assist, and either raising the ball to Capella or shooting an arrow to wait for the shooter behind the bow, resulting in To fuel a hot shooting performance that saw the Falcons make 20 out of 47 triple attempts. The Sixers couldn’t just fall back into their usual drop caps and let Young have whatever he wanted: drive for floats and blocks, exit passes to the 3-point line, fouls, and his own 3-point attempts. They had to take something away.
So Doc changed things up, giving 6-foot-11 defensive player of the year Ben Simmons the primary assignment at 6-foot-1 Young. When the Simmons needed a break or wanted to give Young a different look, Doc turned to Matisse Thybulle, giving the young artist 24 minutes of floor time, his biggest workload of the season, with the express goal of making him annoy the Hawks’ point guards wherever he went. Their height, athletic style, and vigor—along with Senior Philly’s commitment to getting on the ground, often at or near the level of screens that were Atlanta Young’s—helped limit the amount of space he could play in, making it tougher for him to reach the entire course, or To clear the floor, or draw a fine grain on the edge when pulling up:
Lurking behind these point-attack defenders, though, was Embiid, who did a masterful job in Game 2 of covering the quarterback. When Young hit his leg to get to the fairway, Embiid was there to stop the ball, get it out of the paint, and pester him in the ocean. When Young landed the ball and delegated one of his teammates to create, Embiid held his balance, reassessed threat levels, and deterred a new potential driver from his test in the tin. He appeared on screen at the 3-point arc, then made his way back to the edge to break Loeb to Capela. He retreated and tried to play a game of cat-and-mouse, taking the floor while preventing Young from going into his pontoon while also blocking the alley until Young was deep enough in the paint to coat him and induce him to cough up the ball. It was massive and fast and was everywhere:
The combination of Embiid’s looming threat and ball pressure from Simmons, Thybulle and Green helped force Young to four turnovers, and Atlanta to 17 as a team, yielding 28 points for the Sixers. “They have great, tall defenders,” Hawks goalkeeper Kevin Hutter told reporters after the game. “They have players who get into the passing lanes, they have players who arrive a lot, and we just have to take better care of the ball. We have to make better decisions.”
This may extend to decisions about whether or not a bear should be pricked. When Young and Capella found their timing and range, pinning for a lob directly above Embiid’s head, they let out some yawns and yawns about it:
On the possession that followed, Embiid immediately called the ball up the post, and a bull-rushing Capella like an All-Pro edge-rusher returned the beautiful by throwing one straight down on Clint, and let him hear about it all the way back on the court (perhaps in French):
This is Embiid: uncontrollable and unstoppable, unwilling to accept disrespect without pleading for more than his fair share, fully prepared to accept the challenge of smashing your finely tuned defense into the gravel of aquarium, and capable of leading the game completely on both ends of the court. This made him a convincing candidate for the best player, although he missed 21 matches due to various injuries; That’s what makes him such a breathtaking watch as he tries to lift Philadelphia to its first berth in the Conference Finals in 20 years, and to its first championship in nearly 40 years.
His work will be cut off from him. Even with Embiid out, the Hawks still leave Philadelphia with a split, and they have chances to steal Game Two. Philly’s defense is limited, but he’s still 21 points and 11 assists, and he’s had some good looks and playmaking opportunities that just came up short.
“Obviously Ben was guarding me a little bit more tonight, but I had a lot of shots because I was open and they didn’t go down,” Young told reporters after the match.
The Hawks battled all the way from an 18-point deficit in the first half to lead 80-79 with 2:40 to go in the third quarter. It took an out-of-body experience by formerly brawling guard Shake Milton – who scored 17 points in Philly’s first five playoffs, and scored 14 on 4 to 5 3-pointers in just 14 minutes after Doc flicked him late in the third quarter. – To start the 31-9 round that eliminated the match. The Sixers probably can’t count on another hero role like this as the series turns and hits the road.
They’d be able to count on Embiid, though. He’s the driver behind five starters scoring 139.4 points per 100 possessions over two games, and the backline anchor of the defense is good enough to frustrate the talented Hawks who were flying high on Tuesday; I’m not sure which player has a greater impact on their team on both ends of the earth every night. This, of course, was the crux of the argument for the Embiid MVP win. It wasn’t enough to win him that trophy. However, some other shows like this might give him the chance to play for the person he wants most.
