As part of its E3-like news bundle and game reveal this week, EA has canceled one of its most unsurprising games of the year: Battlefield 2042. But don’t get too excited. The word “revealed” should be taken with caution, because we really don’t know much about how the game works – and we expect EA to play fan-like tunes via slow news until the game launches on PC, Xbox and PlayStation on October 22.

For now, the game developers at DICE have confirmed that this is indeed a well-known Battlefield game, complete with massive team combat, the return of popular objective-based modes, and aspirations to deliver the series’ biggest battlegrounds to date. I’ve spent quite a bit of time at Ars hearing this very promise three times, thanks to the DICE team that tends to increase the combat range with each major installment.

The biggest change this time around is finally – finally – moving a maximum number of players up to 128 fighters on a single oversized map in the game’s PC, Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 editions. The series has been popular with over 64 players since its first entry, and over the years Over the years, DICE representatives have explained the limitations by saying that more players doesn’t always mean more fun. But those pronouncements came pretty much before a certain type of 100 player changed everything, and last week, DICE showed off high-level boards for some upcoming maps to prove its design philosophy: separate areas that teams can divide and conquer, rather than throwing several Of the players in the corridors of death.

However, EA is not ready to abandon the previous console generation, meaning that the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the new game will release a maximum of 64 players per match. EA and DICE haven’t confirmed how cross-platform play will work between last-generation and next-gen consoles or between platforms compatible with 128-player maps, but suffice to say that this two-generation technical limitation worth BF2042 will certainly split its player base somewhat.

Join the armed mob of trash town nomads

This lack will be felt more acutely within the BF2042 than in other games in the series, as it will ship without any campaign content to speak of. Instead, EA and DICE recommend fans who want a break from online combat to play the game’s multiplayer modes against AI bots, either alone or with teammates in real life.

In an effort to downplay the lack of a campaign, DICE developers have put on hold the idea of plot pieces appearing in persistent multiplayer modes. But this is about the most interesting plot of the series so far. In the BF2042 near-future version, the climate crisis of the early 2000s will force millions of people from their homes in different parts of the world. Because of geopolitics – or otherwise, no country will accept these crowded masses as refugees. So they are…yes, I’m serious…became armed hordes of nomads who were finally recruited to fight as vigilantes of established nations when a massive world war broke out in 2042.

Somehow, DICE developers were able to follow that story by revealing a few of the new game’s high-tech weapons and vehicles — which these nomads supposedly built on their rafts after climate collapse and cities made of floating plastic trash — without bursting into laughter.

Zoom in/Four of the game’s 10 new “Specialist” classes. A medic can now fire a syringe from a long distance to treat fallen enemies, as an example of how the new game differs from existing DICE classics.

But EA didn’t feature many specific weapons or vehicles other than the unsurprising inclusion of tanks and helicopters, and we were only able to see four of the game’s 10 new “specialized” classes, which will extend the series’ traditional breakdown of four classes. It appears that some of the major combat abilities, such as the use of glide lines, fighting hooks, and wing suits to get around the game’s insanely large maps, will be limited to a few specialists each, but exactly how these abilities will play out is still unclear at this point. While the series will get its first paid “battle pass” in the BF2042, this will not apply to specialists or their abilities; EA insists that this additional paid content will be entirely “cosmetic”. Additionally, like 2019’s BFV, future map content for the BF2042 will be part of the retail purchase price, with no additional DLC purchases required.

The rest of the event contained a lot of announcements that led to unanswered follow-up questions. Dynamic weather events will appear on every map, and we’ve seen a hurricane lift and carry players across at least one of the game’s seven maps at launch, but what other natural disasters might befall combatants? Players can use a special ability to phone call when delivering a tank or fighter plane, but what other Call of Duty-like abilities and gadgets will players have? Destructible buildings will return, but without any visual evidence of that, what will they look like, and can they be as massive as fully collapsible skyscrapers? Two new game modes have been teased, but EA has both slapped them with massive “stay tuned” stickers, along with seven versions of the phrase, “This is not a battle royale.”

For now, we have the above gallery of “cinematic” picks to at least indicate the size and scope of the game’s seven battlefields. While we saw what EA and DICE called “real-time gameplay footage” during last week’s presentation, it’s on to the audience until a later date, and what we’ve seen doesn’t look as polished as the screens above, so keep it a grain of salt in On hand while watching EA release vaccines from BF2042 info over the next four months.
