After the release of her comeback single “Solar Power,” Lorde spoke with Zane Lowe about the song, the song’s origins, and inspiration on Apple Music. “I was at Martha’s Vineyard with my good friend Cazzie, staying at her house. Lord remembered the day the song started, we had just been for the big swim, all day.” My hair was wet, and when I got back to my room, I had a small Yamaha DX keyboard. And I just started singing… and kind of figured out that thing.” She continued:
I was like, what is this? I felt like a “rock DJ,” Robbie Williams’ song. I was like, I don’t know what’s going on here, but I love it. And then, I put it away and had a paddle board, I think, but it was really a natural, exhilarating extension of a great day. Then I think I took him back to town, to Jack [Antonoff]And, as you know, all the windows were open. It was summer. We just followed it up.
Next, Zane Lowe, a New Zealander, told his compatriot that she had picked up “The Voice of New Zealand Summer”. Lord agreed and said that she also sampled cicadas for “solar energy.”
Soon after, Lord discussed background vocals for Phoebe Bridgers and Clairo on “Solar”. She said:
I love these girls so much they killed her on the song. I was like, who are the most, like, god-tier female singers girlfriends that could be in this. And they both just smashed. I was pleased to have it. So talented, so cool, I didn’t have any other voices in my songs. This is the first time people sing with me.
Elsewhere, Lorde acknowledged her song’s vocal similarities to Primal Scream’s “Loaded.” admitted:
I had never heard the Primordial Scream in my life. I was told to check them out. I wrote the song on the piano and then we realized this sounds a lot like “Loaded”. It’s one of those crazy things that I love, they were just spiritual ancestors of the song. You have contacted Bobby [Gillespie]And he was very nice about it. And it was like, you know, these things happen; I caught the feeling we discovered years ago. He has given us his blessing. So let the standard state “loaded” be 100%, the original scheme for this, but we got to it normally. And I’m glad we did.
