Austin interim police chief Joseph Chacon said at a news briefing Saturday that two of the injured are in critical condition.
Chacon said the Austin Police Department has taken six people to the hospital, and Austin County EMS Travis has brought four more for medical treatment. Three other victims were taken to hospital.
One hospital received 11 of the victims for treatment, while another person was transferred to another hospital. Chacon said one person went to an urgent care center with multiple gunshot wounds.
Chacon said police have a very general description of the suspect and the incident appears to be isolated from the area, but they can’t say for certain that there is no additional public danger because the suspect is not in custody.
Police are currently reviewing camera footage from multiple sources, including the public safety camera system, police authority cameras and business surveillance video to determine what happened.
Police said investigators from the aggravated assault, murder, organized crime and gang units are taking part in the investigation. Investigators have not ruled out gang involvement, but say the motive and circumstances that led to the shooting are currently unclear.
Chacon said the FBI’s Joint Counterterrorism Task Force is also on site.
Shortly after the shooting, the Austin Police Department in a Twitter post urged people to stay away from the downtown 6th Street area.
This is an evolving story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
