WDJT reported that Senator Ron Johnson was booed at a Juneteenth anniversary party in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Saturday.

The Senate unanimously passed a bill making Juneteenth a federal holiday on Tuesday, but it was only implemented after Johnson, a Wisconsin Republican, ended efforts to block it.

Johnson said giving federal employees another day off would be too costly, but agreed on Tuesday and said few of his colleagues wanted to discuss the idea.

Many black Americans commemorate June 19th as Independence Day marking the day Union soldiers told the last enslaved African Americans that the Emancipation Proclamation had established their freedom. President Abraham Lincoln signed it two years earlier.

WDJT reported that Johnson was also harassed by a crowd while speaking to reporters.

“We don’t need you here,” someone can be heard saying of Johnson in a video of the event.
